Print These Ledger Line Crash Course Flashcards

A set of ledger line flashcards is just what teenagers need before they return to lessons.

If they aren’t already struggling with ledger lines, then memory loss over the summer break will ensure that they will be soon.

Fortunately, ledger line struggles are not a foregone conclusion. Teens have a secret weapon to solve this problem: cramming.

I remember being a teenager and I recall quite clearly how much knowledge can be learned in a few short days of intense study.

So, if you want to make sure you don’t spend the first few weeks of piano lessons re-learning ledger lines, send home today’s flashcards and instruct your students to get cramming.

There Are No Real Tricks To Reading Ledger Lines

When piano students are brand new and have only a few notes to learn, you can teach them little note reading stories about B the Bunny and D the Dog.

But when students have reached one-octave scales in level 2 methods books and intermediate repertoire, there are so many notes to know, that it is simply easier to remember ledger line notes than it is to remember a thousand cute stories about ledger line notes.

Of course, there are certainly strategies that can help, but at the end of the day, it also requires old-fashioned memorization using tools like games and flashcards.

While flashcards can have a bad reputation from their days of being used to drill math facts, they are quite efficient for learning ledger line notes.

Actually, they are also quite efficient for learning math facts.

The negative associations from flashcards, generally stem from the anxiety kids faced from being tested repeatedly by adults.

If kids are given flashcards to practice on their own, without any pressure, they can be quite useful and rewarding.

So, if you have piano students who are working on one-octaves scales in a level 2B method book or higher, check out the ledger line flashcards we are sharing at the bottom of this post.

Before You Download Today’s Ledger Line Flashcards

In our WunderKeys Level 2 Method Book Series, we introduce ledger lines early and often.

Instead of only focusing on hand positions that are contained within the grand staff, we introduce pentascales in WunderKeys Elementary Piano Level 2A and one-octave scales in WunderKeys Elementary Piano Level 2B that move beyond the grand staff into ledger lines.

Early exposure means more practice and more comfort.

We also include lots of opportunities for practicing ledger line notes in our books through sight-reading, technical exercises, and repertoire. This means that students are regularly exposed to them in a way that is natural and in context.

If you’re ready to take your elementary piano students through a book that boosts ALL of their skills in a purposeful way, check out our WunderKeys Elementary Piano Level 2 Program below.
