Glissando’s Finger Number Clip Cards For Early Primer Students

There is a very good chance that most parents in your studio do not know how to play the piano.

This means that any students who are working in or above a level 1 method book are left to their own devices.

But not your primer students!

Parents are wonderful homework helpers for your youngest kids… and you should take full advantage during the summer months.

In today’s post, we have designed a new set of finger number clip cards that will work as a wonderful parent-supported homework activity.

While the card set is designed to work with our book, Glissando and the Slimy Songbook, it works well as a standalone activity too.

Finger Numbers Are Not As Easy As You Think

Finger number clip cards should be part of every early primer student’s piano lesson because learning finger numbers is not as easy as you may think.

Often, early primer piano students have just learned to count. They can associate a number with an amount of objects (ie. 5 for 5 apples).

And then we confuse them by introducing finger numbers. This can be difficult for little kids because a finger number represents an order, not an amount.

To complicate the issue even further, the fingers of each hand, while sharing the same number, count in opposite directions. For example, when placed on the piano, the RH fingers are counted one to five beginning with the thumb and moving up the keys. However, the LH fingers are counted one to five beginning with the thumb and moving down the keys.

I say all this to simply illustrate that fingers numbers are not as easy as adults may think and learning them takes repetition.

To make this repetition more interesting, today we are sharing finger number clip cards for your littlest piano students. These are a great activity to send home with a new student after a very first piano lesson!
