Sight reading usually goes over a little better when it doesn’t look quite so much like sight reading.
So, we gave it a disguise.
Our new Secret Agent Sight Reading printable turns a Level 1B piano piece into a code-cracking mission. Instead of playing the same middle section each time, students follow a four-digit code through the detective’s briefcase.
There are two codes to crack, so students can play the piece twice and meet a different challenge each time. It feels like a game, but they’re still tracking, reading, and reacting to unfamiliar music. Very sneaky.
How Secret Agent Sight Reading Works
The printable includes a Level 1B piano piece and a detective’s briefcase containing six numbered measures. Teachers create a four-digit code that begins with 1, ends with 6, and uses two numbers from 2 to 5 in the middle.
When students reach the briefcase, they play the measures in code order. Then they continue to the final two lines of the piece. On the second play-through, they follow Code 2 and take a new musical route.
The familiar beginning and ending help students feel confident. Meanwhile, the changing middle builds note reading, careful tracking, and quick musical thinking.
You’ll find the printable at the bottom of the post. Add two codes and send your student on a secret musical mission!
