Once upon a time, piano teachers believed that preschoolers were too young to begin piano lessons. They believed, quite correctly, that preschoolers could not sit at a piano bench for thirty minutes.
And so many preschoolers were denied an early introduction to the piano and their parents were told to wait until their child was seven. There was simply no place for preschoolers in traditional piano lessons.
To Trevor and I, this is a musical travesty. Preschoolers should not be denied a musical education because piano lessons won’t bend… piano lessons should bend to the needs of the preschooler.
The natural enjoyment of music and of the piano is at its height in the preschool years, and if teachers want children to become lifelong pianists, piano lessons should take advantage of this wonderful age when music is magical.
