With the Winter Olympics starting next week, we put together a piano listening game you can use immediately in primer lessons.
In Ready, Set, Rest!, students help a squirrel carry the Olympic flame while reinforcing their aural recognition of quarter rests.
The Olympic theme ties in with our upcoming release, The Get Me To The Games Songbook, V. U. Level K, out next Tuesday, but the game works just as well on its own.
It’s low-prep, easy to explain, and fits neatly into busy lessons.

How This Piano Listening Game Works
Ready, Set, Rest! is a one-player piano listening game that helps students connect what they hear to what they see when it comes to rests.
You clap a short rhythm, and the student listens carefully before matching what they hear to a rhythm card and moving the game marker across the board.
Each turn gives students another chance to link the sound of quarter rests to their visual representation.
The goal is to help the squirrel make it safely to the finish by listening closely and responding accurately. It’s a simple, playful way to strengthen aural-to-visual connections while adding movement and fun to late primer lessons.

Coming Next Tuesday!
If you teach late primer students, The Get Me To The Games Songbook, V. U. Level K was written with this exact stage in mind.
The music stays in C position while giving students the chance to build real confidence playing hands-together stepping and skipping notes, simple left-hand accompaniments, and quarter rests.
Each piece feels achievable but purposeful, helping students move forward without feeling rushed.
It’s a timely, motivating addition for late primer lessons—especially with the Olympics just around the corner.
