Play Back To School Rhythm Battle With Primer Students

With Back To School Rhythm Battle, your students can get into the musical mindset with an activity that reminds them just how fun piano lessons can be.

The first few weeks of piano lessons are all about reconnecting and routines. Jumping head-on into repertoire, especially with primer students, will inevitably lead to misbehavior.

So this year when your students return, don’t fret about immediately moving forward in a method book and instead just enjoy the process of heading out on another year of musical adventures.

And, the best way to begin this adventure is with the card game we are sharing in today’s post.

Rhythm Training Is A Great Way To Start A New Year

When piano students return to lessons, you want them to experience instant success while also having a great time.

This cannot be achieved by heading straight to the piano.

After a month or two away from lessons, your students are likely a little nervous about showing you their skills. Many of them probably didn’t even look at their pianos in July and August!

And we don’t want to make them feel bad about this by putting their struggles on display.

So, a more effective way start to piano lessons is to begin with rhythm training. Kids don’t get nervous about clapping rhythms and generally enjoy any related games.

If you are looking for the perfect rhythm game to welcome students, you will want to download Back To School Rhythm Battle.

But first, let’s learn how to play today’s game.

How To Play Today’s Piano Game

To get the game file, follow the download instructions at the bottom of the post. After downloading the game you will receive a file with the required playing cards.

  1. To begin, the 18 playing cards are spread out on the floor with the rhythms facing up.
  2. The student claps any rhythm shown on a card. The teacher flips over the card clapped by the student and places it in her pile.
  3. Next, the teacher claps any rhythm shown on a card. The student flips over the card clapped by the teacher and places it in his pile.
  4. Players repeat Steps 2-3 (alternating turns) until all cards have been collected.
  5. When all cards have been collected, both players flip through their card piles and score two points for every Green Light Card, one point for every Yellow Light Card, and zero points for every Red Light Card.
  6. The player who scores the most points wins the game.
