Yesterday after her piano lesson, Halle emerged and told me, “Dad, you really need to make more piano games for older kids.”
Even at 14 she still loves it when her piano teacher finishes the lesson with a game.
The difference now? At this age, it’s no longer the kind of game where you secretly let them win.
Ledger line note reading is an advanced skill — which means this time, it becomes a real competition between you and your student.
So, if my own daughter is telling me we need more teen games… then I better get on it…

A Teen-Friendly Ledger Line Challenge
This game is inspired by our hit teen piano book The Stolen Rose Solos.
Students race around an enchanted board trying to catch their opponent while reinforcing ledger line note reading in D Major and B Minor.
Instead of slowly counting lines and spaces, they’re pushed to recognize notes quickly. What can feel like tedious decoding suddenly becomes competitive, fast, and genuinely fun.
It’s designed specifically with intermediate teens in mind, making it a perfect end-of-lesson motivator. And best of all, there’s zero prep for you… just print and play.
And yes… the board itself is beautifully moody and mysterious — because teens absolutely notice these things.
You can download today’s game at the bottom of the post but first…

In 2024, we released “The Stolen Rose Solos”. Composed for intermediate piano students playing in D major and B minor, the classical-pop masterpieces tell the original tale of Beauty and the Beast.
If you can’t wait to get your hands on this piano book, it is available here!
And, as with all V. U. Library books, “The Stolen Rose Solos” is jam-packed with technical exercises, ledger line timed tests, sight reading, and rhythm activities!
