Mystery Note Ear Training

Ear Training Without A Teacher – For Primer And Level 1 Piano Students

It’s likely that you are not seeing your piano students as often now as you did before the world went into lockdown.

And because of this, many students are having to take a more self-directed approach to piano lessons.

Many activities, like note reading homework or repertoire practice, can still happen without the constant presence of a piano teacher. Other activities, like ear training, are not so easily accomplished while alone.

But, with a little creativity, even ear training can happen when students are flying solo.

In today’s post, we are sharing a “Mystery Note” Ear-Training activity that will reinforce listening skills for primer and level 1 piano students.

When students are stuck at home, the most effective ear-training exercises are ones that incorporate their prior musical knowledge; in this case, the recognition of popular piano songs for young kids.

In today’s activities, notes have been “stolen” from the opening measures of popular songs. For each exercise, your students will have to play the available notes, identify the tune, and then find the missing note from a provided selection.
