An Early Primer Board Game For Keyboard Awareness

When you teach a teenage student, a single piano piece can fill an entire lesson. In fact, a single piano piece can fill an entire month of lessons.

This is definitely not the case with early primer piano students.

It takes so much more than a method book to entertain a five, six, or seven-year-old for an entire lesson.

Like Batman needs Robin, early primer piano method books need a sidekick or two. These sidekicks can include supplementary repertoire, off-the-bench activities, and games.

In today’s post we have two such sidekicks. The first is a keyboard awareness board game that we are sharing, and the second is a book of alpha note music that we are showcasing.

Sidekicks For Early Primer Piano Books

When Andrea and I composed our primer piano method books we spent many late nights working out the perfect lesson pacing.

But perfect pacing has its limitations. As kids move through method books, some will move very slowly while others will move very quickly.

To meet their needs, these students need supplementary repertoire (like the book we’re showcasing below) and supplementary activities (like the board game we’re sharing at the bottom of today’s post).

Children who are moving very slowly need additional piano repertoire that keeps them at a certain level without having them play the same song over and over again.

And, children who are moving very quickly need additional piano repertoire to keep them busy as they fly through lessons.

Andrea and Trevor Dow’s Very Useful Piano Library provides the motivating piano books that can help students moving slowly, students moving quickly… and everyone in between.

Last Wednesday, we released our newest supplementary piano book for early primer students: Nuts For Alpha Notes.

Nuts For Alpha Notes is a pedagogical powerhouse jam-packed with piano songs and activities.

Inside you will discover 7 loveable piano pieces with lyrics and teacher duets, keyboard awareness games, rhythm reading practice, finger number exercises, a coloring activity, a practice tracker, and a certificate of achievement.

And there’s more…

Nuts For Alpha Notes contains piano solos composed on the Wunder Staff.

Unique to the WunderKeys Method Books and resources, the Wunder Staff is a modified grand staff used with very new piano students.

Its unique design builds a foundation for future note reading success while also providing a home for alpha notes so students can learn the directional movement of music with much greater success.
