An At The Farm Activity Tray For Preschool Piano Students

If you use the WunderKeys Piano For Preschoolers series in your studio you’ll already know that math is heavily integrated into the program, and that’s because math is heavily integrated into music.

If young children are going to be able to understand rhythm they’re going to need to know how to count. If young children are going to be able to recognize musical patterns, they’re going to need to know how to recognize numerical patterns.

We could go on and on about the math and music relationship… but today we’re keeping it simple. Today, we’re sharing a printable At The Farm Activity Tray that your preschool piano students can use to work on their counting skills.

An At The Farm Activity Tray

At the end of every preschool lesson, there are always a few housekeeping tasks to complete. One of these tasks is usually the completion of a lesson assignment sheet so parents of preschoolers can know what’s going on in lessons.

But what are your preschoolers doing while you fill out the paperwork? Well, from now on, they’ll be working independently on their counting skills with our At The Farm Activity Tray.

Still on the fence about teaching piano to preschoolers? Teachers are building entire studios and filling their schedules with the WunderKeys Piano For Preschoolers program. Read some of their stories here.

Setting Up The Activity Tray

After you read all of the instructions in this post, but before you begin the activity, you will need to download the At The Farm Activity Tray printables found here in the Members Only Printables section of the Growing With WunderKeys Online Toolkit.

To set up the At The Farm Activity Tray you will need to print out, and then laminate, the At The Farm Activity Mat. Next, you will need to print, cut, and laminate the At The Farm Number Strips. Finally, you will need to find something to use as an activity tray (a dinner tray, cookie sheet etc.), a dry erase pen, and a bunch of plastic farm animals.

Using The Activity Tray

During the last few minutes of the piano lesson, have your preschooler sit at a table (or on the floor) with the activity tray. Instruct her to select a number strip and then use the dry erase pen to trace over all of the numbers. When your preschooler has completed the number strip, have her place it over the correct location on the At The Farm Activity Mat. Finally, have your student count out a number of plastic animals that corresponds to the number on the completed number strip and then place the animals in the farmyard.

And that’s it! If your preschooler is an efficient little learner, have her erase the traced numbers on the number strip and begin the activity again with a different number strip.
