A Finger Number Board Game For Primer Piano Students

For a “music” lesson, there are a lot of numbers that primer students need to know when they learn piano.

And the use of these numbers can get confusing.

For example, a quarter note gets one beat. Also, you can play a key one time. Oh, and by the way, your thumb is called your “one” finger.

That is enough to make anyone’s head spin.

With all of these numbers being thrown at them, it is important that a heavy dose of FUN is used when teaching piano to your littlest students.

Using the finger number piano board game we are sharing in today’s post, your students will be all smiles as they try to beat you in a one-on-one race to the finish.

Why Finger Numbers Can Be So Confusing

When little kids first interact with numbers, they are taught to count.

Just think of how often a primer piano student tells you that they can count to 10 or 20 or 100!

After they learn the sequence of counting, they then learn to count numbers of objects.

But what they rarely learn is that numbers can also be used as names.

For young minds, this abstract concept can create a lot of confusion. And that is why the idea of finger numbers can be so difficult for some primer students to grasp.

The best way to make sense of finger numbers is through practice and repetition. The board game shared at the bottom of today’s post is a great way to get started.

But first…

The Perfect Pre-Reading Resource For Little Students

There is simply no substitute for a brilliant pre-reading piano book. A young student’s first experience with piano music lays the foundation for future learning.

So, Trevor and I felt a lot of pressure when creating the Level A resource for Andrea and Trevor Dow’s Very Useful Piano Library.

Fortunately, we work well under pressure. And the result is a pre-reading piano book that makes us very proud!

Glissando and the Slimy Songbook, V. U. Level A is composed on the Wunder Staff using Wunder Dot Notation. Wunder Dots are finger number symbols that allow students to play pre-reading melodies on the black keys before they learn traditional rhythmic notation.

Following the tale of an adorable snail in search of a new shell, your tiny students will fall in love with Glissando as they learn to play simple melodies on the black keys.
