When you are a soon-to-be parent, you are overflowing with baby-raising ideals. You might insist your kids will never eat processed sugar or play with plastic toys.
And then your child arrives, grows into a toddler, and you are, quite literally, just trying to survive.
All of a sudden exciting plastic toys and the odd sugary snack aren’t the end of the world 🙂
The same goes for piano teaching. While we all want our students to be intrinsically motivated to practice on their own, sometimes rewards are all that work.
And during those times, you will want to use our Duck-Billed Dollars as piano rewards and middle C note reading practice.
You will also want to keep reading as we are announcing another new book release!

First… A New Duck-Billed Piano Book
Today’s Duck-Billed Dollars for middle C note reading practice are available at the bottom of the post, but first…
Andrea and I are excited to announce that a brand new book is coming to Andrea and Trevor Dow’s Very Useful Piano Library.
On Tuesday, Amadeus Platypus is One of a Kind, V. U. Level F will be ready for your studio.
Composed for mid-primer piano students, this book is packed with middle C position piano pieces and activities that reinforce playing in 3/4 time.
This laugh-out-loud resource follows the hilarious adventures of a confused platypus that can’t decide if it is a duck, frog, beaver, dog… or something else entirely!
Inside you will discover 7 piano solos, a teacher-student duet, warm-up exercises, note reading games, sight-reading and rhythm activities, a practice tracker, and a certificate.
For now, we’ll leave you with the adorable cover image 🙂

A Duck-Billed Dollar is a piano studio reward that can be used to “purchase” little toys or trinkets from a studio store or music-based rewards like extra game time or a coveted piece of sheet music.
The Duck-Billed Dollars have three note images on the back. Each week, immediately after your student packs up to go home, instruct them to grab a Duck-Billed Dollar from a jar, write the note names below each note image on the back, and then return it to you.
If all notes are named correctly, the student keeps the Duck-Billed Dollar in their binder (a ziplock baggie does the trick!). As their stash grows each week, your student can choose to use the money to purchase a little treat from your studio store.
