Acquire Fire: Print This Quarter Rest Rhythm Game

Have you ever played our piano game, Don’t Catch Cats? With a focus on eighth notes, it is one of our most popular printable activities.

Believe it or not, we have yet to reuse the game’s format… until now!

In today’s post, we are sharing Acquire Fire: a quarter rest rhythm game.

This dragon-themed activity can be used as an enjoyable and educational break from the piano bench.

It also happens to be a game that teachers love just as much as students.

A Quarter Rest Rhythm Game To Enhance Clapbacks

Clapbacks are the go-to educational activity for reinforcing rhythm concepts. Because they don’t require any materials, they take up little lesson time.

But their ease of use does have some downsides.

Specifically, clapbacks lack the symbol recognition that is so important to musical development. So, while students are learning to listen for rhythmic concepts while completing clapbacks, there is no opportunity for sound-to-symbol learning.

This is not to say that clapbacks should be shelved; instead, they should be enhanced and improved upon when time allows.

With today’s quarter rest rhythm game, students reinforce aural recognition AND visual recognition as quarter rest rhythms are practiced.

On Tuesday we released a new book to Andrea and Trevor Dow’s Very Useful Piano Library…

Flight Is Not My Forte. V. U. Level K

When it’s time to finally leave home and set out on her own, can a dragon that is terrified of flight find an alternative mode of transportation? A skateboard? A taxi? A rocking horse?

Flight Is Not My Forte, V. U. Level K is a laugh-out-loud musical adventure that will have you and your students rooting for our fearful friend!

Composed in C position, the late primer piano music in this book will help children gain confidence playing hands-together stepping and skipping notes, beginning left-hand accompaniments, and quarter rests.

Inside you will discover 8 piano pieces with lyrics (including a duet), note reading games, warm-up exercises, sight-reading activities, a rhythm activity, a practice tracker, and a certificate of achievement.
