When teaching piano, I am never happier than when a student is introduced to eighth notes. Eighth notes open up a world of infinite rhythmic possibilities.
Additionally, if introduced properly, learning to play eighth notes is not even that hard. Kids catch on quickly.
The key, of course, is introducing them properly, and this involves exploring eighth note rhythms in multiple ways off of the piano bench.
Having a single go-to method for learning new rhythms isn’t enough. Piano students will shut off their brains if clapbacks are your only tool.
So, in today’s post we’re sharing an eighth note color drumming printable that is novel, exciting, and themed to accompany the book we’ve just released:
Muttzart and Ratmaninoff, In the Hole of the Backyard King, V. U. Level P.

Like all of the piano books in Andrea and Trevor Dow’s Very Useful Piano Library, Muttzart and Ratmaninoff, In the Hole of the Backyard King is a pedagogical powerhouse jam-packed with piano songs and activities.
This level 1B book is composed for students who have been recently introduced to eighth notes and have played music with accidentals. Note: If your students are ready for eighth notes they can jump right into this book, even if they have not used the first Muttzart And Ratmaninoff resource.
Inside Muttzart and Ratmaninoff, In the Hole of the Backyard King, you will discover 8 piano songs, a duet, a composing activity and song, note reading games, an improv activity, sight-reading, a practice tracker, and a certificate.
On top of that, a hilarious comic adventure plays out as students progress through the book. Like any wonderful children’s movie, the humor in the comic will delight students while also giving parents and teachers a pretty good chuckle!
