If you have never taught piano to a teen or adult, you are missing out.
The opportunity to teach, joke with, and simply enjoy the company of an older beginner is a breath of fresh air when you are usually surrounded by little kids.
But there is really only one aspect of teaching older beginners that can be a bit challenging: they can be very self-conscious.
When a teen or adult hits a wrong note that reverberates through the studio, they will likely go red in the face and nervously laugh.
You can reassure them over and over again, but this self-consciousness takes time to dissipate.
So, while you’re waiting for your adults to find comfort in making mistakes, the next best strategy is to provide them with tools they can use to gain skills away from the piano.
