During the holidays, board games and card games are a fixture in our household. We go crazy for Monopoly, Exploding Kittens, and Scrabble.
This Christmas, Trevor and I want your students and their families to make piano board games part of their traditions.
If you want parents to take part in holiday practice, it is a good idea to send activities home that get everyone involved.
Mom and Dad can be so much more than a practice audience that just listens from the kitchen.
In today’s post, we are sharing a reindeer-themed, speed reading board game for primer piano students. Parents can choose to take part as players or as timekeepers.

Get Parents On Board With Piano Games
Primer piano games are an easy way to get parents on board with home practice. When students are just getting started in lessons, the concepts being learned are quickly grasped by parents, even if they do not have musical backgrounds.
In many cases, having not-so-musical parents is an advantage when playing piano games. Not only will your students legitimately beat their Moms and Dads, but they will also be able to take on the role of teacher.
The game we’re sharing at the bottom of today’s post reinforces primer note reading. As mentioned earlier, parents can participate as players or as timekeepers.
To play, your students’ parents will need to know how to read notes in the C five-finger scale. If they are brand new to note reading, their children can actually teach them to read notes on the grand staff before playing the game.
To be a timekeeper, parents need simply to know how to start and stop a watch 🙂
The instructions for our speed reading board game are included on the printable.
The game can only be played one player at a time. If a student is playing her parent, the student begins playing and the parent begins timing. This is then followed by the parent playing and the student timing. The fastest time to complete the game wins.
Before You Download Today’s Piano Game
Trevor and I are thrilled to announce that next week we are releasing Comet’s Freezing Cold Carols, V. U. Level K: Christmas Songs and Activities for Late Primer Piano Students.
In this hilarious musical adventure, Comet, the freezing cold reindeer, decides to quit pulling Santa’s sleigh and seek out a new, warm, and comfortable career. After many funny failures, Comet discovers a solution that lets him return to Santa’s sleigh and his love for gift distribution!
Composed in C position, these reimagined Christmas carols will help children gain confidence playing hands-together stepping and skipping notes, beginning left-hand accompaniments, and quarter rests.
Jam-packed with Christmas tunes, note reading games, warm-up exercises, a rhythm activity, sight reading activities, a practice tracker, and a certificate of achievement, Comet’s Freezing Cold Carols will give the gift of music to your students this holiday season.
