3/4 or 4/4? An Off-the-Bench Fall Piano Game

It’s late September. You have likely been teaching for three, four, or even five weeks.

The honeymoon is over.

Those little angels who sat diligently at your piano bench for 30 minutes are now starting to get antsy 10 minutes into a lesson.

And that’s to be expected. You can’t fight biology. Little kids need physical breaks from challenging mental tasks so they can reset and refocus.

Today’s fall board game is the break your students need to make the second half of a lesson count.

Breezy Beats is more than just a mental reset. It also reinforces listening for the difference between 3/4 and 4/4 time.

A double duty piano activity… gotta love it!

3/4 vs 4/4 Piano Game

Breezy Beats is a two-player fall-themed piano game designed to reinforce recognition of 3/4 and 4/4 time. Players begin at the bottom of their own column of leaves. On each round, a card is flipped to reveal a measure of music, and both players race to decide whether it is in 3/4 or 4/4 time. Once they’ve identified the meter, they roll their die as quickly as they can, trying to be the first to roll the matching number.

The first player to roll the correct number gets to make a strategic move: advance one leaf, place a coin blocker in front of their opponent, or remove a blocker that is standing in their own way. Play continues with a new music card each round until one player reaches the top of their column and wins. The combination of quick meter recognition, dice rolling, and a little strategy makes Breezy Beats a fun off-the-bench way to give primer students lots of practice distinguishing between 3/4 and 4/4 time.

Breezy Beats is available at the bottom of the post but first…
