Squash Note Reading Struggles With Our Musical Alphabet Song

At the start of every lesson, do you sing the musical alphabet with your littlest piano students? Do you sing it in reverse?

There is no better way to welcome a child into your piano studio than with a happy, little sing-along. The start of every Mr. Roger’s episode would support this conclusion 🙂

And when that happy, little sing-along is a tool for reinforcing note reading, you become a piano teaching superstar.

Sing the musical alphabet in reverse.

Let’s Sing The Musical Alphabet In Reverse!

Today we are sharing a sing-along that you can use at the beginning of every preschool and primer piano lesson. The printable contains sheet music to be played by you (the teacher) and lyrics to be sung by you and your student.

The lyrics reinforce a student’s ability to sing the musical alphabet backward… a secret weapon skill that eliminates note-reading struggles.

As young kids play music, they are actively saying the note names in their heads. And, because early primer music moves in steps, the notes are being recited in alphabetical order. But, if your students were to say the note names out loud, you would quickly discover that they are experts at naming notes that step up and then struggle badly when naming notes that step down.

This is where the Reverse Musical Alphabet shines.

When your kids can recite, “G-F-E-D-C-B-A” as easily as they recite, “A-B-C-D-E-F-G”, their note reading struggles will dissipate.
